Projected 2026/27 imports
- Philippines5.6M MT
- Vietnam4.0M MT
- China3.3M MT
- Prices were driven by import dependence, freight and supplier availability.
- USDA projects 2026/27 EU imports at 2.35M MT and exports at 410,000 MT.
- Higher freight and insurance costs raised landed costs, especially for Asian-origin rice. Demand stayed stable in retail and foodservice.
- US export competitiveness declined and supply constraints emerged.
- USDA cut its 2025/26 US long-grain export forecast to 50.0M cwt, citing weak international demand.
- Mexico’s rice imports fell about 20.0% in the first seven months of its 2025/26 marketing year, as Brazil and Uruguay gained share from the US.
- Reduced long-grain acreage and higher input costs supported forward prices.
Near term, rice prices may remain mixed. India’s ample supply can cap gains, while fertiliser and freight costs and tighter US and Thai acreage may limit the downside.
H2 2025 market summary
The second half of 2025, region by region.
Asia
Prices generally softened as supply improved after India lifted export restrictions and new harvests arrived. India stayed competitive while Thailand and Vietnam faced pressure. Pakistan’s basmati prices firmed late in the year on flood damage and water concerns.
Europe
Prices stayed relatively stable, supported by adequate Asian imports and easing global export prices.
North America
Prices remained broadly stable, with comfortable domestic supply and steady export demand. Competition from lower-priced Asian origins limited US export gains.
